WWB Seeks Nominations for the 2014 Ottaway Award

New York City, New York, April 8, 2014—Words without Borders seeks nominations for the second annual Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature. The deadline to submit a nomination is Friday, May 2, 2014.

Named in honor of the first chair of Words without Borders, James H. Ottaway, Jr., the award recognizes individuals who have taken extraordinary steps to advance literature in translation in the United States. In accordance with the mission of Words without Borders, the awardee is selected on the basis of his or her efforts to build cultural understanding through the publication and promotion of international literature. 

The inaugural Ottaway Award was presented to esteemed book editor Drenka Willen in 2013. For close to fifty years, Willen has been a tireless advocate for international literature, working with such authors and translators as Günter Grass, Octavio Paz, José Saramago, and Wisława Szymborska, as well as Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco, Stanisław Lem, Edith Grossman, Margaret Jull Costa, and Geoffrey Brock.

The 2014 Ottaway Award will be presented at the Words without Borders annual gala dinner on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Tribeca Three Sixty in New York City.
