Alexei Bayer was born in Moscow. In 1974 he immigrated to the United States, where he works as an economist and economic writer. His fiction works have been published in various US literary journals, including Kenyon Review and New England Review. Bayer and Andrei Gelasimov have cooperated in translating each other's works. A collection of Bayer's short stories, Eurotrash, was translated by Gelasimov and published in Moscow in 2004. His detective novel, Murder at the Dacha is coming out in July 2013 in the author's translation from the Russian.
