Sanneke van Hassel

Sanneke van Hassel (b. 1971, the Netherlands) is the author of three collections of short stories, IJsregen (Ice Rain, 2005), Witte veder (White Feather, 2007) and Ezels (Donkeys, 2012). Her stories won her the BNG New Literature Prize and her work has been praised for its powerful atmosphere, its sharply drawn characters and situations, and its economical style....

In 2006 she wrote Pieces of Sarajevo about everyday life in Sarajevo and in April 2010 she organized a short-story festival in Amsterdam called Hotel Van Hassel. Since then she has been active in putting together programs focusing on short stories. In the summer of 2010 her first novel, Nest, was published. Together with Flemish writer Annelies Verbeke she compiled an international anthology of forty short stories from all over the world called Naar de stad (To the City, 2012). A story by Van Hassel was published in Best European Fiction 2012 (edited by Aleksandar Hemon).
