Our Year, in Review

As 2013 draws to a close, we'd like to thank our writers, translators, and readers for their many contributions in the last twelve months. This year has been one of celebration, as we marked our tenth anniversary, welcomed a new executive director, published our first e-book anthology, and presented the first Ottaway Award, on top of delivering twelve varied and compelling issues of literature in translation.

Those issues presented our first pieces translated from Faroese, Hausa, Luganda, Marathi, Runyankole-Rukiga, Sinhala, and Swahili, to reach an even hundred source languages. And we added four new countries—Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Uganda—to the 120 already represented. Our readership numbers have increased each year, but in 2013 they hit new heights, setting records for the most pageviews in a month (April’s “Iraq, Ten Years Later” ); on one day (the June launch of our fourth Queer issue); and in the first week (our December Oulipo issue).

Our new executive director, Karen Phillips, joined us in September, just in time to guide our anniversary festivities. We celebrated in style with a blowout gala, our best-attended to date, at which we presented the first Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature to the incomparable Drenka Willen.  And we delivered our first e-book anthology, Words without Borders: The Best of the First Ten Years.

We’re reaching another milestone next month, when we move into our first physical offices. We’ll have details after we’re settled in. In the meantime, stand by for Kurdish, Polish, and Japanese writing next month, and do join us as we head into 2014 and another year of celebrating the riches of international literature.
