Lilya Kalaus was born in 1969 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She is a philologist, author, literary editor, script writer, radio presenter, and artist. She is the author of seven books, both for children (with Zira Nauryzbayeva) and adults, and her stories have been published in print and online literary journals in Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Germany, Ukraine, and the USA. Kalaus is a member of the Kazakhstani Union of Writers and the Kazakhstani PEN club, and is the head of her own publishing company. You can find her on Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter.
Shelley Fairweather-Vega translates from Uzbek and Russian into English, specializing in texts concerning culture, history and politics. "The Stone Guest" was her first collaboration with Hamid Ismailov. She has also translated two other Uzbek stories and two novels by Ismailov, published in 2019 and 2020, and fiction by several other authors from Russia and Central Asia. Shelley is the president of the Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society and she lives in Seattle.
