Chiba Mikio was born in 1944 in Miyagi prefecture, Japan. After working at a publisher of children's literature, he became a professor at Chiba University of Art, where for nine years he taught the theory of picture books and children's literature. He now works as an author and critic of children's books, and is active as a scholar of Japanese monsters.
