Francis R. Jones

Francis R. Jones is Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Newcastle University, UK, specializing in translation studies. He studied modern and medieval languages at the University of Cambridge, modern Serbo-Croat poetry at the University of Sarajevo, and applied linguistics at the University of Reading....

He has published ten book-length volumes of European poetry in translation from Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (Mak Dizdar, Ivan V. Lalić, Vasko Popa), Dutch (Hans Faverey), Hungarian (Miklós Radnóti) and Russian (Vyacheslav Kupriyanov). He has also worked on a wide range of Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Dutch, Flemish and Dutch Caribbean Creole poets, from the fourteenth to the twenty-first century, for anthologies, poetry journals, festival publications and seminars. Francis Jones's translations have won a number of UK and international prizes; he is the only translator to have won the UK's biennial European Poetry Translation Prize twice (outright in 1991, and jointly with David Constantine in 1997). HIs translation of Hans Faverey's selected poems, Against the Forgetting, will be published in February 2004 by New Directions.
