Günter Kunert

Günter Kunert, one of the best and most versatile German-language writers today, has received numerous prizes for his poetry and prose. Born in Berlin in 1929, he was "encouraged" by the East German government to leave East Berlin in 1979, partly for reasons the present poem, "Belagerungszustand," makes clear.
