Masuri S. N.

Born in 1927 in Singapore, Masuri S. N. (full name Masuri bin Salikun) is a pioneer in modern Malay poetry. A prolific poet, fiction writer, and essayist, as well as a teacher, Masuri also cofounded Angkatan Sasterawan ’50 (The Singapore Malay Writers’ Movement ’50, better known as Asas ’50), the literary and advocacy organization devoted to the Malay language and progressive politics. Masuri was recognized throughout his career with many awards and commendations. He died in 2005, but his influence and impact on the Singapore Malay literary scene continue to be felt today.
