Mbate Pedro was born in Maputo in 1978. He has published four books of poetry, in addition to several poems and essays in literary magazines and anthologies. He received the BCI Prize for Literature in 2015 for Debaixo do Silêncio que Arde (Beneath the Burning Silence) and honorable mention from the Glório de Sant'Anna Prize for the same work.
