Vilma Arêas was born in Campos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1936. For many years, she was professor of Brazilian literature at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). She made her debut with the short-story collection Partidas in 1976. She has published eight books in total and has received the prestigious Prêmio Jabuti twice. She lives in São Paulo.
