Words Without Borders Launches Poems in Translation Contest

Mónica de la Torre to Judge

We're pleased to announce a new contest to spotlight some of the groundbreaking poets working around the world today and to celebrate the art of translating poetry.

The contest is open to contemporary international poetry translated from other languages into English. Four winning translated poems will be co-published on Words Without Borders and in Poem-a-Day, the popular daily poetry series produced by the Academy of American Poets, throughout September, which is National Translation Month.

The winning poems will be selected by acclaimed poet, translator, and scholar Mónica de la Torre, along with the editors of Words Without Borders.

The winning poets and translators will be awarded $150 each.

Submissions will be accepted from May 28, 2019, through midnight June 28, 2019. For contest guidelines and to submit, please visit:

Mónica de la Torre works with and between languages. Her most recent poetry book is The Happy End/All Welcome, a riff on the art installation The Happy End of Franz Kafka's America, itself a riff on Kafka's unfinished Amerika. It was published by Ugly Duckling Pressewhich also put out her translation of Defense of the Idol by Chilean modernist Omar Cáceres in 2018. Other books of hers include Public Domain and Sociedad Anónima. She was born and raised in Mexico City and has lived in New York City since the 1990s. She serves on the editorial board of UDP’s Señal series, which publishes contemporary Latin American poetry in translation and is a contributing editor to BOMB Magazine. Her new book of poems, Repetition Nineteen, is forthcoming from Nightboat in 2020.

The Academy of American Poets is our nation’s leading champion of poets and poetry. Founded in 1934, the organization produces, the world’s largest publicly-funded website for poets and poetry; National Poetry Month; the popular Poem-a-Day series; American Poets magazine; Teach This Poem and other resources for K-12 educators; an annual series of poetry readings and special events; and awards more funds to poets than any other organization. It also coordinates and supports the work of a national Poetry Coalition, an alliance of more than 20 poetry organizations working to promote the value poets bring to our culture and the important contribution poetry makes in the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds.
