Words Without Borders Receives 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Grant

New York, New York, February 4, 2021—The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has just announced that it will distribute more than $25 million in support of 1,073 arts and cultural organizations nationwide. Words Without Borders is honored to be named one of the NEA’s 2021 grantees. WWB will receive an Art Works award to fund the publication of its monthly magazine, its education programs through WWB Campus, and its free virtual literary events.

The Art Works funding category supports projects that focus on public engagement with, and access to, various forms of art across the nation; the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence; learning in the arts at all stages of life; and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support this project from Words Without Borders,” said Arts Endowment Acting Chairman Ann Eilers. “Words Without Borders is among the arts organizations across the country that have demonstrated creativity, excellence, and resilience during this very challenging year.”

"We are proud to receive support from the NEA to expand access to groundbreaking and timely literature in translation in 2021,” said WWB Executive Director Karen M. Phillips. “At a time when homebound readers are looking for a connection to the world, this grant will help us keep our programs free and accessible to readers across the globe.”

This year, with the support of the NEA, Words Without Borders will publish new writing translated from Malay, Galician, Russian, Mapuche, and more in its digital magazine. WWB will bring this vital literature to classrooms around the world through its education program, WWB Campus, with new remote learning resources and professional development workshops for educators. WWB’s free virtual literary events with international authors and translators will also be supported by the Art Works grant.
