Elke R. Steiner

Elke R. Steiner is a comic book artist and illustrator. Born in 1971 in Bremen, she studied arts and visual communication in Münster/ Westfalen. Since 2000 she has lived and worked in Berlin. She often participates in international comic workshops, and has published several comic books and exhibited her comics in Germany and abroad. For more information see

Edna McCown translates works of fiction and nonfiction from the German, including Aimee & Jaguar by Erica Fischer and Leni Riefenstahl: A Life by Jürgen Trimborn. Among the authors she has translated are Gert Hofmann, Thomas Hürlimann, Lilian Faschinger, Alfred Döblin, and Saša Stanišić. She holds a PhD in German literature and has served on the juries of the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize and the PEN Translation Prize. In 2004 she was a founding member of the annual New Literature from Europe Festival, initiated by the Goethe-Institut.
